General information


Victoria University of Wellington (The Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington) offers the Tongarewa Scholarship Program, which provides grants and scholarships ranging from US$5,000 to US$10,000 annually to international students. The purpose of this grant program is to provide financial support to international students.

The grant offered by the Tongarewa Scholarship Program is a partial grant, which is used to pay for one year's tuition.

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a first-year undergraduate or one-year master's program.

Academic achievements are taken into account when determining the amount of the grant.

Applications for the scholarship program are accepted three times a year. 2023 admission deadlines: June 1; September 1; November 30.

Submission of documents


To participate in the scholarship program, an online application form is required;

To fill out the application form, first of all, a student account must be opened;

A student account can be opened through this link. When opening an account, two different account names appear — Staff account and Student account. International students must choose a student account.

The following documents are required to be uploaded as part of the online application form:

A personal statement of up to 500 words explaining why the candidate wants to study at Victoria University of Wellington, their academic goals and why they deserve the scholarship. Also, in the personal statement, in addition to the lessons in the school or team, it should also indicate training and leadership skills.

Complete academic transcript (Grades) and other major-related documents.

An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington An offer letter can be conditional or unconditional.

ID proving you are a student at Victoria University of Wellington.

Note: applications for this program usually start one month before the deadline.
