The Getty Scholar grant program allows you to live and conduct research in the US for up to 9 months with full funding

General information

The Getty Scholar Program offers grants to top research professionals, distinguished scholars, and exceptionally talented researchers in the arts, humanities , or social sciences to pursue and discover new knowledge in their fields.

Scientists are provided with accommodation and all necessary resources, freed from work-related obligations. They also get the opportunity to enjoy the cultural life of the city and immerse themselves in the scientific environment.

Residency period: from 3 to 6 months.

Useful aspects

  1. An office from the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa and an apartment from the Getty Scholar Housing Complex are provided.
  2. Round-trip airfare to Los Angeles and medical insurance are provided.
  3. $21,500 for a three-month program ; $43,000 for six months ; $65,000 for nine months .
  4. Access to the Getty Institute's library and collection will be provided.
  5. Opportunity to participate with colleagues from around the world in a week-long workshop organized by research or on a theme of African-American art history .

Submission of documents

  1. Fill out the online application by the deadline.
  2. A project statement (in electronic form, double-spaced , not to exceed five pages) outlining the applicant's teaching and research plan, how the project aligns with the program of the year(1) and how Getty resources, including the library and collections, are relevant to the project (2) is asked to describe.
  3. CV/résumé.
  4. They should attach an optional sample of their written work.

Once you have created and saved your application, you can continue on the same form by selecting the "Attachments: In Progress" link to return to your saved application. Otherwise, you might accidentally create multiple versions of the same application.

Additional information

Applicants will be notified of the outcome approximately six months after the application deadline. The Getty Scholar grant is awarded on a competitive basis. Applications will be evaluated based on: 

  1. The overall quality of the submitted application;
  2. The degree of relevance of the proposed project to the annual research topic;
  3. Achievements of the applicant;
  4. How important the Getty's resources, library, and collections are to the project.
