Project round 06.10.2021 98

Round 57. SATREPS-2020 competition for joint international scientific projects of Uzbekistan-Japan cooperation is announced

The Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the coordinators of the SATREPS-2020 project "The Project for Development of Innovative Climate Resilient Technologies for Monitoring and Controlling of Water Use Efficiency and Impact of Salinization on Crop Productivity and Livelihood in the Aral Sea region" The project of development of new technologies of monitoring and control of efficient use of water resources to fight pollution and increase the productivity of land use») announces a competition among research groups of Uzbekistan.

This competition is held in accordance with the requirements of the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 133 of March 9, 2020 "On measures to further improve the regulatory legal framework for the development of scientific research and innovative activities".

Scientific teams wishing to participate in the competition should apply for participation in the competition within the framework of mutual agreement with their Japanese partners and project goals.

This project aims to establish a climate change monitoring center, conduct meteorological monitoring, as well as monitor the level of well-being of local communities in the Aral Sea region under conditions of limited water supply and combat salinity in agriculture in order to increase land productivity. provides for the introduction of new technologies.

The project aims to create and test innovative agricultural techniques using meteorological observation data and direct forecasting in the harsh salinity conditions of Uzbekistan, in particular, Karakalpakstan. The implementation of this project is directly aimed at finding adaptation measures to climate change and addressing salinity problems and availability of water resources in the lower reaches of rivers.

The project is based on the participation of a number of Uzbek and Japanese higher educational institutions, research institutes, the Aralboyi International Innovation Center under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a consortium of ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan and Japan within the framework of the SATREPS program of the Japanese government. is being implemented with the help of the private sector. Funding of the activities of research groups in Uzbekistan is carried out by the Ministry of Innovative Development of Uzbekistan.

The main directions of research according to the project components approved within SATREPS-2020:

  • Innovative "know-how" in information systems - close to real-time monitoring of climate change based on data from geostationary meteorological satellites, monitoring and evaluation of changes in solar radiation. Project implementation period: 2023-2026.
  • Creation and development of salt and sand storm monitoring, forecasting and early warning system. Project implementation period: 2023-2025.
  • Monitoring of water and land resources, assessment of water-energy balance, development of a modern system of climate change modeling for water resources and their use, control and mapping of soil salinity; Assessment and forecasting of long-term changes in the productivity of agricultural lands and the dynamics of salt accumulation in the lower reaches of the Amudarya and the Kashkadarya river basin; Assessment and forecasting of biomass growth, accumulation dynamics and productivity under salinity conditions using data collected by MODIS, GCOM-C Landsat, Sentinel and local unmanned aerial surveillance drones. Project implementation period: from July 2022 to July 2025.
  • Introduction to the application of modern methods of assessment and introduction to the culture of halophyte flora of the Aral Sea. Development of fertilization methods and cultivation agrotechnics for the cultivation of promising halophytes of non-traditional crops resistant to salt and drought; biochemical analysis of seeds and the biotechnological basis of their propagation and in-situ and ex-situ storage. Project implementation period: from July 2022 to July 2025.
  • Development of a closed cycle agricultural system under salinity to optimize water use in changing climates; use in non-traditional halophyte system agriculture and agroforestry systems resistant to salt and drought; studying their physiology, phytoremedial properties and commercial value (forage and nutritional value, medicinal properties, nectar and honey richness, etc.). Project implementation period: from July 2022 to July 2026.
  • Developing land-use scenarios to maximize production-distribution chains under water-scarce conditions under salinity and climate change. Analysis of the added value chain and marketing of finished products, high-income non-traditional plants and crops; dissemination of successful business models for sustainable development of agriculture under salinity at the level of small villages and local communities. Project implementation period: 2023-2026
